Defending our Democracy in the Digital Age

Fair Vote UK and the APPG on Electoral Campaigning Transparency are proud to announce the launch of the report Defending our Democracy in the Digital Age. This ground-breaking report sets out 20 recommendations on how to protect UK elections and referenda from ‘dirty money and dodgy data misuse’.

The landmark report is the result of a major inquiry which took place over several months in 2019 and called a range of leading experts on electoral law. The Parliamentary group received written and oral evidence from more than 70 organisations and experts including Facebook, the Information Commissioner’s Office, and the Electoral Commission.

MPs, regulators, peers, and campaigners reveal how UK elections are wide-open to abuse, with electoral law not properly updated since 2001 – when the internet was barely recognisable compared to today. It presents one of the most comprehensive answers so far to the concerns around election safeguarding in the UK.

Since publication, this report has been used and cited by the Electoral Commission, academic institutions, and others. The extensive input we received during consultation has made this a seminal document for Fair Vote UK, informing us and our civil society partners about the greatest threats to democracy in 21st century Britain.

You can download the report and accompanying appendices, as two separate documents.
