This week, Byline Times published a recent op-ed written by Kyle Taylor, Executive Director of Fair Vote UK.

He states that Britain’s political funding system is becoming increasingly dominated by wealthy mega-donors, with £14.2 million donated to parties between April and June 2026 — a 74% increase on the previous year. This creates an “arms race” between parties, forcing them to compete for ever-larger donations and giving a tiny number of wealthy individuals disproportionate political influence.

Kyle also rejects the argument that donation caps are anti-union, stressing that collective trade union contributions are fundamentally different from one billionaire making a multi-million-pound donation. He therefore calls for a low, legally binding cap on political donations before the next election, arguing that the Government must move beyond its proposed taskforce and act quickly.
