A new Fair Vote UK poll of 2,024 eligible UK voters found overwhelming support for limits on political donations, with 92% of respondents backing a cap of some form. Only a small minority believed there should be no limit on how much money an individual can give to a political party.
The finding comes as Parliament continues to debate reforms to the rules governing elections and political finance.
Respondents were asked what limits, if any, should apply to political donations. Options ranged from a complete ban on private donations in favour of public funding, through to various capped levels, as well as an option for no limit at all. Across the political spectrum, support for introducing some form of limit was overwhelming.
The result suggests there is broad public agreement on a principle that is often absent from Westminster debates: politics should not be shaped by who can afford to write the biggest cheque.
With 92% of voters supporting a cap, this is one issue where public opinion is remarkably clear. The question for politicians is whether they are prepared to act on it.
